Icheon Knee Pain — If It Hurts More Going Up and Down Stairs, Read This
Icheon Knee Pain If It Hurts More Going Up and Down Stairs, Read This
Hello.
I'm Director Seo Se-wook of
Kyunghee Yakson Korean Medicine Clinic in Icheon, where I treat knee pain.

When patients open the door and walk into my office,
I can tell right away.
People with bad knees
gently rest one hand on the knee
as they sit down.
When coming down the stairs, too, they grip the handrail tightly
and descend slowly, one step at a time.
Today's topic is
none other than Icheon knee pain.
In the course of treating patients,
I hear these comments very often.
"Doctor, my knee hurts
but I don't know what's wrong. I'm scared to get an MRI..."
"It's fine when I walk,
but stairs and squatting down are really hard."
"In the morning when I get up my knee is stiff,
but after walking a bit it feels better. Why is that?"
You can relate, can't you?
The knee is a joint that bears the full weight of our body
thousands of times a day.
Resting because it hurts disrupts daily life,
but just enduring it only seems to make it worse.
I fully understand this uneasy feeling.

Today I'd like to address the three questions
that people struggling with Icheon knee pain ask most often.
One. I can't figure out the exact cause
of why my knee hurts so much.
Two. Does knee treatment at a Korean medicine clinic
actually work?
Three. How long do I have to come to get better,
and what if it comes back?
I'll explain these three points
one by one.

One. You need to know exactly
why your knee hurts.
The causes of knee pain are
far more varied than you might think.
Sometimes it hurts because the cartilage has worn down,
sometimes a problem has developed
in the ligaments or tendons around the cartilage,
and sometimes the muscles around the knee have stiffened,
overloading the joint.
That's why, at Kyunghee Yakson Korean Medicine Clinic,
for anyone who complains of knee pain
we first perform a precise ultrasound examination.
Only after seeing it with my own eyes
can I clearly tell you where the problem lies.
This is my principle for ensuring there's no anxiety about
"being treated by guesswork alone, without imaging."

Two. Knee treatment at a Korean medicine clinic —
how is it actually carried out?
[I think of knee treatment in three stages.]
First, the stage of bringing down the swelling
Second, the stage of restoring movement
to the stiffened joint and muscles
Third, the stage of strengthening the surrounding tissue
so it doesn't get worse again
Pharmacopuncture treatment
plays an important role in all three of these stages.
Because the pharmacopuncture must be placed precisely
at the inflamed site,
we proceed while directly checking the location with ultrasound.
We also make use of acupuncture, electroacupuncture, physical therapy, and large-cone moxibustion.
When necessary,
we combine this with an herbal medicine prescription
that helps the joint and muscles recover as a whole.

Three. Treatment duration and recurrence —
let me be honest with you
This is the question I get asked the most,
and the part I have to answer most honestly.
The course of knee pain
varies greatly depending on how long you've had it.
If the pain started just within the last few weeks,
it often eases up relatively quickly.
On the other hand, if it's a pain that's lingered for months or even years,
it takes a bit more time.
Among the older folks who work at the market or in the fields
near Changjeon-dong in Icheon,
many repeat the cycle of
"getting a little better and then overdoing it again."
There's something I always tell them.
"The pain going away
doesn't mean you've fully healed.
If you overdo it before the tissue has recovered enough,
it will quickly come back."
That's why I don't see becoming pain-free
as the end of treatment.
Until function returns
and you can trust and use your knee in daily life —
that, I believe, is real treatment.

Knee pain —
it especially helps people like these.
Those in their 50s to 70s
who've grown uncomfortable going up and down stairs,
those who stand on their feet all day
or often squat down,
those who've put up with it, thinking
"Ah well, it's only natural as you get older."
Knee pain is not the fault of age.
Find the cause, and it can get much better.
In my office, I never say
"Well, you're getting on in years,
so this is about as good as it gets."
When your knees can't hold up,
you end up giving up walking, stairs, and going out one by one.
I hope you'll have it properly checked at least once before that happens.

Today I've summarized Icheon knee pain
in three points.
Identifying the exact cause comes first,
step-by-step treatment including pharmacopuncture is the key,
and even after the pain is gone,
we must see it through the recovery stage to prevent recurrence.
If your knee hurts and you don't know where to go,
or if you've been putting it off thinking it'll be fine,
please come in once.
I'll examine it and let you know.
Deciding after that is not too late.
This has been Director Seo Se-wook of Kyunghee Yakson Korean Medicine Clinic in Icheon.
Please don't carry your knee worries alone for too long.
