How I Treat Pain: The Treatment Philosophy of Kyunghee Yakson Korean Medicine Clinic

Hello, this is Seo Se-wook from Kyunghee Yakson Korean Medicine Clinic in Icheon.

I've talked many times on this blog

about treatment methods and conditions,

but I've never actually told you

what mindset I bring to my practice.

When choosing a clinic, the treatment method matters,

but in the end, I believe you can receive treatment with peace of mind

only when you have the trust that says "I can put myself in this person's hands."

Today I'd like to talk about

how our clinic approaches pain treatment,

and the things I consider most important

when I see patients.

What I believe matters most in treatment

is "seeing accurately."

Even with the same shoulder pain,

the tissue causing it can be completely different.

  • Whether it's a rotator cuff problem,

  • whether there's inflammation in a bursa,

  • or whether a ligament is damaged —

the treatment direction changes entirely depending on this.

If you treat only by roughly targeting an area,

even if it improves, it may take a long time

or the same problem may keep coming back.

That's why at our clinic,

when a musculoskeletal patient comes in,

we begin with an ultrasound examination.

With an ultrasound exam,

we can check the condition of the soft tissue in real time.

During the exam, I look at the screen together with the patient.

Instead of just saying with words, "this is the problem area,"

I let you confirm it with your own eyes.

There's a reason I do it this way.

When patients understand their own condition,

they build trust in the treatment,

and they tend to manage themselves well afterward too.

It's not "you said it hurts here,

so we'll treat here,"

but rather "we checked together and found this kind of problem here,

so this is how we'll treat it."

I think that difference is significant.

"Please make the pain go away quickly"

is something I hear often.

Of course, easing the pain you have right now is urgent — that's true.

But if it ends there,

the same problem ends up coming back before long.

I've seen many people who, thinking they were cured once the pain was gone,

overdid it and then got worse again.

[We view treatment in four stages.]

First, we relieve the pain you're feeling right now.

Second, we calm down the swelling and inflammation.

Third, we restore the weakened function.

Fourth, we set a management plan

so the same problem doesn't recur.

Because this process doesn't end in one or two treatments,

we put together a treatment plan during the first consultation.

Instead of "just come in a few times,"

we discuss the overall flow and the expected duration

together before we begin.

At every visit, we check progress with ultrasound

and adjust the plan as we go.

Progress can vary from person to person,

but treatment with a goal and treatment without one are definitely different.

There's one more thing

I pay special attention to

when I see patients.

It's explaining the cause and the progress

as simply as possible.

If I say "there's inflammation in the soft tissue,"

from the patient's perspective it doesn't really sink in.

So I try to put it this way whenever I can.

"This muscle area here is swollen,

so it catches every time you move.

If we apply pharmacopuncture here, the swelling will go down

and your movement will become easier."

I believe you can entrust yourself without anxiety

only when you understand why this treatment is being done.

The same goes for prescribing herbal medicine.

If you're taking conventional medication,

we check for any interactions and let you know,

and we tell you in advance about symptoms to watch for.

Even if you're worried about taking them together,

we adjust things safely case by case,

so feel free to tell us.

I believe treatment is most effective

when the patient can entrust themselves without anxiety.

Our clinic

is not a large hospital.

But because we are a neighborhood Korean medicine clinic,

I believe there are things we can do.

Being able to get checked quickly nearby

when it hurts, without having to travel far;

being able to ask right away

whenever a question comes up during treatment;

being able to receive consistent care while monitoring progress.

I believe these things

actually affect treatment outcomes.

Especially with musculoskeletal conditions,

it's rare for treatment to end in one or two visits,

so it's important to come consistently and monitor progress.

Making it possible for you to go through this process

close to home, without any burden —

that, I believe, is the role of our clinic.

Today I wrote this for those who are in pain and unsure where to go for treatment.

We'll check your condition with ultrasound
